Politicians can be two things: fighting for re-election or a
lame duck (knowingly serving their last term). Both have drawbacks. Those
fighting for re-election make decisions that will get themselves re-elected
sometimes going against what is best for everyone. Lame ducks are not listened
to because people know they can just wait these politicians out until they
leave office. But, as I learned in The Texas Tribune's article posted July 14, 2014, Analysis: Not Bad, for a Lame Duck, Governor Perry is an
exception to this rule. He is getting his voice heard on national issues like
border control and on state issues like higher education reform. As a UT
student, I was interested by the article because it showcased the story of
President Bill Powers and Governor Perry butting heads (with both men coming out
with their own victories). Everyone in this class should read this article
because this conflict affects all college students. Overall, while I don't necessarily
agree with everything Governor Perry is fighting for on these issues, I admire
that he is at least fighting for something on his way out of office. This is
definitely a good read- reasonably short, informative, and an entertaining
story.
